BACKGROUND

New Moms – a family resource center in Chicago – was in between communications specialists. They were looking to fill that gap, while also tapping into an outside perspective to elevate their communications and marketing work to the next level. The nonprofit had a series of high-stakes fundraising events on the calendar, in addition to their day-to-day needs on social media, e-newsletters, executive communications and more. With the mission of supporting young moms and their families, it was important New Moms found support they could count on to quickly jump in to keep communications and fundraising efforts moving full steam ahead.

Our SUPPORT

Smart Cookie spent around nine months helping drive New Moms’ mission through communications, marketing and fundraising support. The team immediately began planning, curating content for and publishing on a variety of platforms, including multiple e-newsletters each month targeting various stakeholder groups; social media celebrations, updates and announcements; and executive communications announcing new initiatives. They also conducted one-on-one interviews with participants, hearing their successes and amplifying them into stories News Moms could use to showcase why their mission is so important.

The team also ran communications and marketing campaigns surrounding critical fundraising efforts, including two large in-person events and multiple giving campaigns. For each initiative, Smart Cookie provided a brand refresh and design development, strategic outreach planning and implementation. 

Smart Cookie completed an organization-wide brand and messaging refresh as well, giving an updated strategy to make sure stakeholders receive the information they need when interacting with the nonprofit. They also led the creation of the organization’s annual report from start to finish, offering an updated look and feel the organization could use long into the future.

IMPACT

Through its partnership with Smart Cookie, New Moms strengthened its brand, streamlined communications operations and shattered fundraising goals – all while staying focused on what mattered most: supporting young moms and their children. 

With consistent messaging, refreshed visuals and a clear communications strategy in place, the organization was able to engage stakeholders more effectively across digital platforms, events and donor communications. Storytelling efforts elevated the voices of program participants, helping donors and partners better understand the real impact of New Moms’ work and deepening emotional connection to the mission. Specifically, the year-end giving campaign led by Smart Cookie raised $43,000, exceeding its $30,000 goal.

The result was not only record-breaking fundraising success, but a stronger, more confident communications infrastructure that New Moms can continue to build on for years to come.
